The Cayman Islands Constitution 2009: The present constitution, which came into effect on 6 November 2009, provides for the government of the Cayman Islands as a British Overseas Territory. It is the fourth written constitution issued for the Islands by the British Crown since 1959, though there is a history of over 165 years of representative government. In July 2016, several minor amendments were advanced to Sections 96, 97(3) and 106 of the 2009 Constitution, by way of the Cayman Islands Constitution (Amendment) Order 2016 (the “Amendment Order”). These amendments, which were proposed with the support of the Honourable Premier, the Honourable Leader of the Opposition and the Judiciary, relate to the tenure of and applicable disciplinary procedures for our judiciary.
